Brno WorldSBK: Rinaldi leads wet opening session
Aruba Ducati wunderkind Michael Ruben Rinaldi took advantage of a drying surface at Brno to set the fastest time in this morning’s opening WorldSBK practice, going almost a second quicker than Loris Baz.
Rinaldi set a 2’08.905 as a dry line appeared on all but the wettest part of the Czech Republic track with push the Althea BMW of Baz down to second place with Barni Ducati’s Xavi Fores in third place a tenth behind the Frenchman.
Reigning champion Jonathan Rea led the way early doors but only completed two flying laps before sitting out the rest of the session while title rival Chaz Davies finished down in 14th place even with 12 laps on the board in a very topsy-turvy session.
Former MotoGP regular Yonny Hernandez, who has raced at Brno more regularly than the rest of the pack, finished in fourth after being top of the tree with two minutes left, and is only 0.072s behind Fores.
Noo Yawker PJ Jacobsen ended his first session in fifth place on the Triple M Honda 1.411s off the pace and just in front of Jordi Torres. Rea trails the Spanish MV Agusta rider 0.444s with Pata Yamaha’s Alex Lowes next along.
Marco Melandri and Tom Sykes completed the top ten. Lorenzo Savadori was the quickest of the Milwaukee Aprilias in 11th, one in front of Donington podium man Topratz. Leon Camier was 13th, one ahead of Davies while Tati Mercado rounded out the top 15. Eugene Laverty finished in 18th.
